Stainless Steel Pipe

Stainless steel pipe is typically specified as OD (outside diameter) and WT (wall thickness) and mechanical properties of the base stainless-steel material. It is resistant to many forms of corrosion, has hygienic sterile properties, high quality aesthetic appeal and exceptional strength.Pipe are manufactured in round, square and rectangular sections in a variety of wall thicknesses. It is usually manufactured by the processes of longitudinal welding, hot and cold drawing (seamless) or spiral welding. Finishes or appearance range from unpolished to highly polished. Unpolished has a 2B mill finish, standard polished is a finely grit polished finish and there is a finer buffed finish giving close to mirror appearance. Finishes are selected to suit application and aesthetic appeal.

Stainless steel Pipe can be joined by welding, which facilitates rigidity in construction, or by the use of mechanical fittings which enables dismantling for hygienic cleaning.Pipe is usually annealed if extensive forming and bending is required, such as for bending or expanding. The products system incorporates a comprehensive range of stainless-steel fittings in the form of elbows, tees, reducers and flanges in various sizes, wall thickness, grades and finishes to suit tube dimensions and tolerances.

ASTM A106 seamless pressure pipe (also known as ASME SA106 pipe) is commonly used in the construction of oil and gas refineries, power plants, petrochemical plants, boilers, and ships where the piping must transport fluids and gases that exhibit higher temperatures and pressure levels. All forged ASTM A106 GR. B Carbon Steel Seamless Pipes should be solution annealed according to the heat treatment section to restore the ferrite – austenite equilibrium. The weld metallurgy of ASME SA 106 GR. B Carbon Steel Welded Pipes, as with other ferrite – austenitic stainless steels, has a ferrite structure during solidification. And when the weld metal temperature of ASTM A106 GR. B Carbon Steel EFW Pipes is in the 2100 Degree F to 2640 Degree F (1150 Degree C to 1450 Degree C) range, it is possible for the HAZ to increase its ferrite content. It is the cooling of the high temp ferrite of ASME SA 106 GR. B Carbon Steel ERW Pipes that allows retransformation into austenite, yielding a ferrite – austenite weld structure. Cooling rates of ASTM A106 GR. B Carbon Steel Round Pipes are extremely important as getting the weld area too hot, or using too much weld energy, leads to cooling rates being too slow, allowing the formation of embrittling sigma phase in the heat affected zone. Conversely, if not enough weld energy is used in ASME SA 106 GR. B Carbon Steel Square Pipes, then the cooling rates are too fast, leading to too much ferrite in the weld metal and a fragile weld joint.

Note:-

 

The minimum wall thickness at any point shall not be more than 12.5% under the nominal wall thickness specified. Weight of any length shall not vary more than 10% over and 3.5% under that specified. NOTE — NPS 4 and smaller — weighed in lots. Larger sizes shall be weighed separately by length.

Square Steel tube is strong, tough and durable. It can also be rectangular. Steel tubing often incorporates different alloys such as aluminum, manganese, titanium and tungsten. Its versatility lends it to a range of applications in different industries. Each year millions of tonnes of steel tubing is produced.
Steel tubing can be welded or seamless. Seamless tubes are made by passing the molten steel over a piercing rod to create a hollow tube. Welded tubes are made from curling a rolling plate and welding the seam together. In the past, seamless tubes were stronger than welded tubes. However advances in technology have allowed welded tubes to have sufficient strength to replace welded tubes for many applications.
Rectangular and square HSS are also commonly known as tube steel or box section. Circular HSS are sometimes mistakenly called steel pipe, although steel pipe is actually dimensioned and classed differently from HSS. (HSS dimensions are based on exterior dimensions of the profile; pipes are also manufactured to an exterior tolerance, albeit to a different standard.) The corners of HSS are heavily rounded, having a radius which is approximately twice the wall thickness. The wall thickness is uniform around the section.

Stainless steels are high-alloy steels, which have high corrosion resistance when compared to other steels due to the presence of large amounts of chromium. Based on their crystalline structure, they are further divided into ferritic, austenitic, and martensitic steels. Another group of stainless steels are known as precipitation-hardened steels. They are the combination of martensitic and austenitic steels.

Grade 201 stainless steel has good formability, corrosion resistance, and fabricability. It is similar to that of 301 stainless steel.

Grade 201 stainless steel is annealed at 1010-1093°C (1850-2000°F). Temperature should not be exceeded above 2000°F in order to avoid scaling. It is rapidly cooled to prevent crystallization of carbides.

301 is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel. This alloy is non- magnetic in the annealed condition, but becomes magnetic when cold worked. Within the scope of the ASTM Type 301 specification, chemical composition and processing modifications can result in a wide range of engineered material properties targeted at specific applications. Type  301  is available in the annealed as well as a variety of temper-rolled conditions. 301 Stainless Steel exhibits corrosion resistance comparable to Types 302 and 304 in most mild service conditions. Resistance to food service requirements and atmospheric corrosion is excellent.Stress cracking resistance is similar to Type 304. The optimal corrosion resistance is obtained in the cold worked then annealed condition.

 

When Type 301 is heated or cooled slowly through a temperature range of 800 – 1600 °F (427 – 871 °C) without subsequent annealing, it may undergo carbide precipitation that may result in intergranular corrosion

 

High strength and excellent corrosion resistance make Type 301 Stainless Steel useful for a wide variety of applications. Typical uses include aircraft structural parts, trailer bodies, diaphragms, utensils, architectural and automotive trim, automobile wheel covers, roof drainage products, tablewear, storm door frames, conveyor belts, sinks, subway cars and appliances.
